Walking & Hiking
Northern Ireland has the perfect walk for everyone, from hiking hero’s to weekend wanderers. You’ll discover mountains and moors, beautiful beaches, forests & valleys. Wake up with a stroll on Downhill Strand or scale the heights of the Mourne Mountains. Slightly further afield, and not for the faint hearted, you can hike up the stairway to heaven, otherwise known as Cuilcagh Way.
Golf
Ireland’s spectacular north west coastal terrain is ideal for great golf courses that include the Royal Portrush! Expect massive dune mounds, tall grasses that frame the fairways and stunning ocean panoramas. Better still, the courses are located relatively close to each other and to The Willows, so you’ll spend more time on the fairways and less time in your coach or rental car.
Binevenagh
Binevenagh Mountain is a nature reserve, formed 60 million years ago by molten lava. The steep cliffs stretching over six miles, overlook Benone Strand with views of Lough Foyle and Donegal on a clear day. The artificial lake on the mountaintop is stocked with rainbow trout.
Fishing
The area around Roe Valley Country Park near Limavady is one of outstanding natural beauty and the river is famous for salmon and trout fishing. In the park there is a footbridge just upstream of Givan’s Weir, which gives good access to the river on both sides.
Angling licenses are available for anyone wanting to fish on the Roe River and take advantage of the river ‘at the bottom’ of the garden!
Game of Thrones
The Willows provides the perfect base for exploring some, or all, of the 23 Game of Thrones filming locations in Northern Ireland. Walk the King’s Road, explore Lordsport, visit the House of Greyjoy and the Haunted Forest. You can also complete your Doors Passport, there’s one right here in Limavady, at the local bar.
Festivals
Limavady is famous for its festivals! Stendhal, winner of best small festival in the UK, The Danny Boy Jazz and Blues Festival, the Food Festival and many more.
Mussenden Temple
Mussenden Temple is a popular wedding ceremony venue located in the beautiful surroundings of Downhill Demesne near Castlerock in County Londonderry. It perches dramatically on a 120 ft cliff top, high above the Atlantic Ocean on the north-western coast of Northern Ireland, offering spectacular views westwards over Downhill Strand towards Magilligan Point and County Donegal and to the east Castlerock beach towards Portstewart, Portrush and Fair Head.
The Giants Causeway
Stand on the hills that gently arc this precious UNESCO World Heritage site and you’ll look down on thousands of basalt columns tumbling down into the Atlantic Ocean. It’s an epic sight, with a whopping 40,000 or so of these hexagonal-shaped pillars, which dates back to a volcanic age almost 60 million years ago!
